Our blue van trundles down a country lane by the coast in the springtime. We are on our way to have lunch. A warm breeze shakes the daffodils as we make our way to the water's edge. The lake glistens in the afternoon sunshine. The four of us line an old wooden bench. Apart from the unwrapping of sandwiches, and distant bird song across the lake, there is not a sound to be heard.

I used to be self-employed as a jobbing carpenter, specialising in old town and country houses. Being my own boss had always appealed to me ever since I was an apprentice. Maybe it was the way everything was down to you, and answering to nobody apart from your customers. But after 10 years of working on my own, and apart from the occasional job where I had to call in some extra help, I was offered the chance to work for a partnership of carpenters. I took it, for a range of reasons, but mostly because it was essentially what I was doing more of by taking on extra help. But this way I would be doing less of the business admin, and more of what I liked - working with wood, on some really rewarding projects.

So when I look around me at my colleagues having their lunch, I realise that it wouldn't have been just any partnership I would have entered into. I knew these carpenters fairly well, as two had been apprentices with, and the other two I had called in from time to time to help with bigger jobs.

Being in a team also means buying assets for the business is less of an impact. We're currently upgrading some of our equipment and power tools. A series of purchases like this can be a real issue for a self-employed carpenter, but when you're in a team the cost is spread out. Also, you need to take into account the fact that when you're working on your own, you may need to buy a piece of equipment that may be only rarely used. Hiring is an option of course, but this is a cost as well and it's a good idea to have as much of your gear owned as possible.

For example, we needed some new area lights the other week. Because as a team we can work into the night without tiring ourselves out by doing it in a shift pattern. The intricacies of our work mean the lights need to be up to the job. Even if I was doing the job on my own it would have taken weeks rather than days, and the cost of lighting would have made the job nonviable financially.

Hiring would have been expensive too. But now we've got the ability to buy the right equipment to do jobs efficiently. Maybe I will go back to working on my own one day, but right now, by the serenity of the lake, team work suits me perfectly.

Home-based businesses are starting up all around the world, and there are plenty of benefits that come with it. One of the best advantages to having a home business is that you have time on your side. You don't have anyone rushing you so you can take your time and become familiar with all aspects of having a home business. However it is easy to get off track without someone telling you what to do, so here are a few things you have to become aware of.

In having your own home business, it is critical that you become involved with all aspects of it. Starting from the idea of the product, all the way to when it hits the shelves for consumers. If you put other people in charge of certain aspects, it can be very easy to get manipulated if you don't know what is going on.

You should take the business seriously; it should be something you truly believe in. If you work hard at it, good things will happen. If you slack off at it, nothing will come of the business. And if nothing happens to the business, you could be stuck in a 9-5 job in a tiny cubicle.

The biggest thing you must become familiar with when running your home business is the Internet. This is a key tool for a successful business. Having a website is great for customers because it enables them to have access to your company 24/7 at the click of a mouse. You should be able to know how to design a website and if you don't there are several places on the Internet that can either help you or do it for you.

Exploration is a great thing to do. You should study all aspects of your business. You should become familiar with the product you are creating. You should know your competitors and how you can set yourself apart from them. You should also explore ways of how you can handle your business better. People are coming up with new marketing and other business ideas everyday and you should know about all the options that are available to you.

Having a home business is great. You can wake up whenever you want, wear what you and work when you want. However there is a lot of discipline that comes with this and you need to be able to stay focused. There are just a few of the many things one should know and be aware of when owning your own business.

Amway, MLM or Network Marketing and the Paradigm Shift to Modest Clothing

There is a large movement within the Christian community toward modest clothing. The hope of most in this movement is to effect the rest of society to begin dressing modestly. The practice of the business community and Amway, MLM or network marketing may indicate that this goal is achievable.

If you only consider the advertising policies of major corporations you would be inclined to wave the white flag of surrender in this effort to effect society toward modesty. Of course the advertisers are acting on research that indicates they can sell more product by including a scantily clad woman in their add (for more information on this phenomena see Melissa Duriga's article "Visual Science and the Feminine Masterpiece").

You must understand that although the big corporations receive most of the press it is small business that fuels the American economy. It is estimated that about 70% of all jobs in America are provided by small business. There is no question that the media images produced by big business can transform society. Because of their numbers does it not make sense that the practices of small businesses can reform society as well?

Amway or MLM is certainly not a majority of small business in this country but network marketing constitutes a significant portion of small businesses. As the leader in the industry most direct selling companies emulate some of what Amway has done to achieve their success. One of the principles that Amway has lived by for many years, and has been incorporated by many other network marketing companies is "Dress For Success".

If you will pick up a copy of the "Dress For Success" books you will find that a major component of the dress for success strategy is conservative, or in other words, modest, dress. "Dress For Success For Women" will counsel to not wear short skirts or dresses and to not wear tight fitting clothing. If you were to attend an Amway convention or even one the local distributor business meetings you will find a room full of well dressed men and women, and the dresses will be much more conservative than what you will find in your typical department store. These women seem to make an extra effort to find the most modest clothing for business purposes. Or it may be that they only own one modest dress, but that is the dress that they wear when attending an Amway function.

Do these women dress modestly because they are so much more virtuous than the rest of American society? Although virtue is a principle that is taught by the leadership in Amway, that is not how they sell the idea of dressing modestly to new recruits. When they are setting up the first meetings for new recruits they tell them that if they will dress conservatively (read modestly) they will relate to the largest number of prospects.

Imagine that. Immodest dress turns people off when relating personally in a business relationship. Maintain hope. We can reform society for modest dress if we simply persevere.

Since the rise of facebook and twitter, social networking is a must have as part of your traffic generating arsenal. There are so many active sites and people out there, that it would be a waste if you didn't take advantage of the power these sites offer you in terms of traffic. If you don't use social networking to drive traffic, then your business will most likely fail in the long run.

(1). Increase traffic through Friends - Friends are the heart of the social networking attitude, and when promoting content this can be a valuable tool in viral marketing. The more friends you have in your network, the more visibility you will have when promoting.

(2). Increase traffic through Blogs - Blogs are one more great way to spread the word, most blogs allow you to post nameless comments. I use these blogs to post a comment then I include a link to one of my sites. I achieve a free back link for simply commenting on a story.

(3). Increase traffic through Picture Perfect - You may not understand it, but by passing on uploading your picture, you are also passing on an opportunity to get more people clicking on your articles. Why? Well, for one, it is known that spammers never take the time to upload a picture. Second, it is called 'social' networking and 'social' bookmarking sites. If you are trying to be 'social' then you should put a face to your name.

(4). Give your profile page a "character" - On my profile pages at myspace.com, digg.com, linkedin.com, stumbledupon.com and yahoo.com I have links to all my social network profiles & personal projects. Another service that you might find interesting is myspacestats.net , a service that tracks and stores your social networking traffic. The service simply puts an image on your profile and counts the total amount of visitors per day, month and year. Great to see what profiles are getting the most action, so yo may focus on networking on those sites which provide to be valuable to your efforts.

(5). Bulletin boards are great - This goes hand in hand with having many friends, because the more friends you have, then the more prospective people you have viewing your bulletins. Don't become spammy and post every 5 minutes, once a day is fine! You might like to post at different times of the day to get different people online to view your message... and don't be afraid to send a new message each time round.

(6). Increase traffic through Content - Nothing is more important than content. If you are a good writer and you write about interesting topics, you are going to do well on the social networking sites. People seem to like top 10 lists, top 20 lists, etc. I suggest that you look at digg.com to see what gets the most diggs. I have failed multiple times on getting a post digged or stumbled, even when I thought that it was the best article ever. You don't always win.

(7). clipart and screensavers - Offer free images for people to download, and make sure your website is clearly visible. This is free and very powerful advertising.

Finally your network will grow to a point where it becomes truly helpful, so make sure that you are part of a few of the more popular social networking websites. It's free to join, so do it! As your presence grows and you become more popular, people will perceive you as more of an expert, and trust you more and more... this will create loyalty in the long term.
